Hunting area
Biokovo is located along the Adriatic coastline, near the well-known seaside resort of Makarska. At 1,762 metres, it is the second highest mountain in Croatia. From the beach, you can see the steep wall of this 17,000-hectare hunting ground.
This brings us to the point that makes this trip so unique. The contrast could not be greater. As you drive in an all-terrain vehicle up to an altitude of 1,200 metres, you can see the picturesque fishing harbour below. Along with all the hotels and boutiques, getting smaller and smaller.
Once you reach the top, you enter a completely different world. Stones, rocks and light-green vegetation give substance to the rough landscape. Here you will be hunting with a stunning view of the sea.
On clear days, you can even see the outlines of Italy on the other side of the salty water. In a breathtaking setting like this, hunting the Balkan chamois is a privilege that you must have experienced at least once.
Hunting season
The hunting season for Balkan chamois runs from 1 October to 1 February. Rutting time starts around November, but October is also good in terms of hunting success.
This has everything to do with the weather. In the mountains, temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees can still be described as mild. This is much more pleasant than the freezing temperatures in December and January.
And what to say about the sunny 25 degrees at the beach or the pleasant water temperature of 20 degrees? Your travel companion for sure wouldn’t mind those tropical circumstances.
Along paths that were once used by goat herders, you will hunt through this impressive terrain. Trust your guide, who knows where the chamois are. He has often found the game with his bare eye before you can even see it through your binoculars.
