For red deer hunters, the road to Rome usually leads through Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria. A sporty hunter may opt for the Romanian Carpathians, but rarely does one deviate from these ‘usual suspects’ to shoot a big stag.
In general Croatia is better known as a holiday destination than a hunting nation, but the opposite is true. This hidden treasure has a lot to offer to the travelling hunter.
Bears can still be hunted in the Balkans. Along the Adriatic coast there are plenty of mouflons and Balkan chamois. Towards the east, the extensive areas are inhabited by wild boar and red deer. Big red deer.

Hunting area
Slavonia and Peteranec are two completely different hunting grounds. Slavonia belongs to the largest oak forest in Europe where French and Italian wine growers have their barrels made. Peteranec also has oak forests but further varies this biotope with acacias, rowan trees and swampy moors.
There is also a similarity: both areas have an excellent red deer population. The chance of a capital trophy is considerable. Around 40 stags are awarded a medal every year for their impressive antlers.
The large deer population of Peteranec is known throughout Croatia. The trophy weights usually vary between 7 and 10 kg. In Slavonia the trophies can compete with the antler weights from Peteranec but the way of hunting is different from what you are used to. The woods are in fact divided into square sections of 750 by 750 metres.
Here you stalk towards the roaring stag that moves from one section to another. Once the moment has come to take the rifle towards your shoulder, there is no time for hesitation. This is hunting on adrenaline, for the fast decision makers who dare to trust their guide.
Hunting season
For the most beautiful experience, there is no better time than rutting season. If you want to be sure of a place during the peak of the rut, it is best to book a date between 10 and 20 September. From the hunting lodge you can hear rutting deer everywhere. This sensation is an encore to this Croatian adventure.
Do you dare to deviate from the usual routes and opt for a new adventure? Then you will be surprised in the most positive way. Compared to other European countries, Croatia is a relatively small but the hunting opportunities are enormous.
Pioneers who went before you returned with words of praise about the good food, friendly people and blood-curdling rutting moments. Now it is up to you to write your own chapter in Croatian hunting history. Dobra kob!
Travel details
From the airport your guide will take you to the hunting lodge. This drive takes about one and a half hour. A second option is to travel by car. This can be interesting for hunters who want to explore Croatia after shooting their stag.
When you arrive at your accommodation, a test shot will be fired at 100 metres. The guesthouse where you are staying is centrally located in the hunting area. Each hunter has his own room with sanitary facilities.
In addition to these facilities, WiFi should not be missing from today’s basic comfort. The cooking skills of the lady of the house will undoubtedly contribute to your memory. She will introduce you to the delicious Croatian cuisine.
Deer hunting in Croatia is done from the high seat, stalking or a combination of both. The guide that accompanies you reads the area like an open book. The red deer and the rutting places have no secrets for him. He will do everything in his power to get you to a big stag. And so far, he has succeeded every time.
