The chamois hunt in France takes you to the far south of France in the beautiful Pyrenees. Along the mountainsides, you wil stalk over stones and crawl along bushes. Lunch will be consumed in the field while being treated to a magnificent panorama. With the treeline in sight, the hunt gets more and more interesting.
Other animals and birds can be found here such as vultures, the rare golden eagle, mouflon, ibex… and chamois. The French ‘Isard’ is the symbol of the Pyrenees, but for you, this graceful game species will also symbolise an unforgettable hunting memory. The Pyrenean chamois will make you sweat, enjoy and never forget.

Hunting area
Far from ski lifts and civilisation, you will feel that you are alone in the world. The thin air, breathtaking views and steep, serene mountains make for a hunting adventure of the highest standard.
This hunt is not only for the fittest. Chamois are active during the day, which plays into your hands. The hunting begins in the morning to last the whole day. Almost all hunters have been lucky enough to descend the mountain with a bagged chamois in their backpack.
Hunting season
“The peace and quiet of the mountains and the fact it is so overwhelming, is often the first thing I hear our guests say.” Our French partner Lucien is speaking. “Here they can really take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.” For almost twenty years, he has successfully been guiding hunters up the mountains.
“We hunt the Pyrenean chamois from October to February. At the beginning of the season, they still have that characteristic reddish-brown coat. As the winter progresses, that coat gets darker and darker.”
The vertical hunting grounds under his care are well represented by the elegant climbing game. Lucien: “Due to the low hunting pressure, it is even possible to get quite close to the chamois.”
Travel details
There are two ways to travel to the Pyrenees: by car or by plane. If you are staying in France for a longer period of time and you plan to take a few days’ holiday after the hunt, driving your own car is a good option.
The region is full of beautiful cities, historic villages and authentic French markets with delicious local products. Southern life is all about enjoyment, this is ‘la douce France’ at its best.
A charming inn will welcome you for four nights, including breakfast and dinner. What follows are three adventurous hunting days in the French Pyrenees. Your guide is familiar with the mountains and the habitat of the chamois.
As winter approaches, all wildlife descends further into the forested areas. In both cases, both the hunting and the experience – like the mountains – are ‘hors catégorie’.
