Hunting area
Despite their high numbers, roe deer are not hunted intensively in France. The French attach more value to hunting in groups for small game and, of course, the autumn driven hunts, or battues.
But hunting from the high seat, which we and especially the Germans are fervently love, is not part of the French hunting culture. Of course, this in turn creates opportunities for passionate foreign hunters who want to try their luck in another country.
Our French partner has understood this well. In the southwest, in the departments of Lot, Dordogne and Gers, he put all his focus on roebucks. In total, he manages more than a hundred hunting grounds, ranging from 300 to 4000 hectares.
Hunting season
In France, roebucks may be hunted from 1 June. Until the end of the rut in mid-August, this is also the best time to catch some nice, big bucks. The biotope and the game present hold no secrets from our local guides.
They know exactly where to find the game and they will take you to a spot where you’ll have a good chance of bagging a nice trophy. Those who have already visited these regions know that they are home to the soul of La douce France, with beautiful landscapes of rolling hills to mountains.
Travel details
During your stay, you will be accommodated in a beautiful B&B which the French call a chambre d’hôtes. Depending on the location, a gîte rural or guest house is also a possibility. In most cases, this includes a refreshing swimming pool.
Between the morning and evening outings, this is your base where you can enjoy the peace and quiet and the mild southern climate. Both breakfast and dinner are taken care of, all you have to do is take a seat.
You will be picked up by your guide for each outing. Three mornings and three evenings, you’ll go into the field together in search of a strong, French roebuck. Hunting involves a combination of sitting, waiting and stalking. You will notice that your guide has done his homework well – you can expect to get a good opportunity to shoot during every outing.
The rut begins at the end of July and is an experience in itself. Prime roebucks that cross the grain field at a distance of 300 metres to respond to your guide’s luring call is nothing short of sensational.
