Roebuck hunting in Latvia

Latvia has one of the world’s rarest ecosystems, which has remained largely untouched despite modern civilisation. More than half is covered by forests, coloured by 12,000 rivers, 3,000 lakes and 40 nature parks.

The experience of this trip is short, but that is also its strength. These two wonderful days are all about relaxing, hunting and enjoying. As an added bonus, you may see more different types of wildlife than ever before in this beautiful Latvian setting.

Hunting area

The country is so sparsely populated that primeval animals such as elk, bear, lynx and capercaillie still roam the Latvian wilderness. But ‘our’ big game like roe deer and red deer also thrives well.

Our partner in Latvia manages a total of 8,000 hectares of hunting grounds. He lets his roebucks mature until the antlers reach their peak. This is reflected in the strong six-points with beautifully pearled racks.

Hunting season

Roebucks can be hunted from 1 June to 30 November. Rutting time in Latvia is the same as in most countries. At the end of July the bucks start to compete with each other until about 10 August.

Around this time the grain is already threshed and the game shows itself even more. Our advice is to mark some days in your hunting calendar during these three weeks.

The territories and habits of the big bucks are well-known. Following in the footsteps of your guide, you will stalk and post at these hotspots.

Travel details

Once you have landed at the airport you’ll be picked up by Nikolajs, our partner in Latvia who speaks English. During the hour-and-a-half drive to the hotel or guesthouse, you’ll get a good first impression of the country and its beautiful nature.

Four outings are planned that will take you along meadows and forest edges – places that hold no secrets for your guide. He’ll provide the sighting and opportunity to get your Latvian buck. No need to do any calculations, two bucks regardless of size or weight are included. Even a third or fourth buck is a possibility.

The stay is based on full board. The rooms are equipped the way we like them when we travel: neat, clean and with their own shower and toilet. Diet conscious eaters will have no complaints about Latvian cuisine. Locally grown vegetables adorn every plate, always complemented by meat or fish. In most of the main dishes you will taste dill – the Latvians’ favourite herb.
