Roebuck hunting in Romania

Romanian roe deer have acquired their own status as game species. When hunters talk about Romania, at first they think of the Carpathians, along with the red deer and brown bears that roam the mythical mountains.

But in the lowlands and foothills of the Carpathians, there are also prime roebucks. Well-trained stalkers let you reap the benefits of their years of preparation here.

Hunting area

The quality of the bucks has long been iconic among foreign hunters. Strong and high between the ears with dark, heavily pearled antlers. On average, these antlers weigh between 300 and 550 grams. This is thanks to the local hunting associations who continuously improve the biotope and create the ideal habitat for roe deer.

Add to that the mild continental climate, combined with a varied food supply, and all the ingredients for healthy bucks with heavy antlers are there. Yet all this would be nothing without the long-term vision of the local managers: quality before quantity. In this respect, the Romanians are more like wine growers who give their bucks time to mature.

Hunting season

Roebuck hunting starts on 15 May. “This is the best time to come to our country,” adds our partner Cristian. “Romania is often associated with the dark mountains of Transylvania, when in fact the opposite is true. Flowers, plants and herbs carpet the fields like a colourful blanket. People’s eyes light up when spring arrives and our nature and wildlife areas are in full bloom.”

Until the first week of June, we enjoy hunting in this green setting. Cristian: “After that, the grass is too high for the game to be approached properly. But of course there is still the rut, when roebuck fever reaches a peak. As a rule, mating season starts between the last week of July and 10 August. My heart still jumps to my throat when we see one of those old, prime bucks coming towards us.”

Travel details

One of the advantages of the European Union is the ease with which you can travel to other EU member states these days. Romania is no exception, with daily flights to our hunting grounds near Cluj and Timisoara. A driver will meet you at the airport who will take you to the hotel.

Even if you don’t spend much time in your room, it is still important to us that the travelling hunter’s basic needs are met. That begins with a freshly made bed and a clean bathroom with its own shower and toilet. In most cases, wifi is available so that you can relax after the hunt with television from your home country or a series on Netflix.

Three full days of hunting are planned with a total of six outings. After a rich and varied breakfast, you and your guide drive to the hunting grounds before first light in search of mature bucks. The same ritual awaits in the late afternoon. On request, you can also sit and wait for wild boar in the late evening.
