“The acoustics in the mountains amplify every sound. From rolling stones, for example, or a creaking branch. So to keep our presence in nature as muted as possible, we have to watch our step along the way,” says our Slovenian partner Renato.
As a child, Renato was raised in the Alps; today he lives a quarter of an hour from Pohorje. “The term ‘pristine hunting’ does not seem more applicable anywhere than here.” While climbing and observing, being silent is of the utmost importance. “Most hunters have no problem with that either,” he adds with a wink. “They can use that breath well enough to spare their lungs.”

Hunting area
The top hunting grounds are all state-owned. Chamois are managed sustainably. Whereas Austria and other European countries are seeing a decline in the population, Slovenian numbers remain stable and strong.
The mountain hunting areas are truly immense. This makes it perfectly possible for two hunters – each with a guide – to go out and stalk all day without ever meeting.
Hunting season
Chamois can be hunted from 1 August to 31 December. From October, the animal changes from summer to winter coat. That’s when the characteristic beard starts to grow.
From mid-November onwards, it becomes more difficult to capture game. The chamois climb higher and higher and the mountains are often buried in snow. ‘
Until November you can rest assured. Two days of hunting is enough to have a good adventure and bag your chamois.
Travel details
The hunting grounds are located between an hour to a maximum of two hours’ drive from the airport. Your guide or another member of the organisation will take you from here to the hunting lodge in the mountains.
Where there are chamois, there are no luxury hotels. But that’s okay, after all you are here to hunt and that’s what you’ll be doing most of the time. Chamois are diurnal animals, so you don’t have to get up early. After a decent breakfast, the hiking boots are put on and you’ll probably only return at nightfall.
Nevertheless, these charming mountain huts are tastefully furnished with a stove, cooking facilities, a shower, toilet and a soft bed. When you are hunting in Pohorje, there are even several restaurants in the deeper mountain village where you can eat a delicious, inexpensive meal.
