The most dominant species however is the fallow deer, of which this hunting ground has an abundance.
Hunting area
The 3,500-hectare area is located along the former golden trading route between Prague and Passau, specifically in the Příbram district.
Emperor Charles IV – himself a passionate hunter – was so impressed by the region and its wildlife that he appropriated Vargač Castle as his favourite hunting lodge. It is on these royal grounds that you go hunting.
The relief of this region alternates between a flat and a hilly landscape. Oak trees and pine forests provide natural cover for the large game that roams in large numbers.
As one of the few hunting grounds in Czech Republic you will even find a small population of American whitetails in this versatile biotope.
Hunting season
The fallow deer hunting season starts on 1 August and runs until 31 January. Hunting during the rut is a spectacular experience as it is for any deer.
Due to the urge to mate, the deer become less cautious and more approachable during this period. In order to increase your chances of shooting a beautiful stag during mating season, it is best to choose a date between 15 October and the beginning of November.
But also after the rut your chances of success are very high. Three full days of hunting are enough to get a shot and hear your guide say the redeeming words ‘Lovu zdar’!
Travel details
On the day of arrival, you can go straight into the forest for the first outing. Fallow deer are easy to hunt during the day. But of course, you can also first recover from the trip, take a shower and regain your strength in the restaurant. This can easily be arranged with your guide.
Each hunter is accommodated in a hotel or guesthouse with its own room and sanitary facilities. For us, this is part of the basic comfort that we particularly value on every trip.
The next two days, you will go out first thing in the morning and a second outing is planned for the afternoon. In between, you will be served a tasty breakfast with coffee, various fillings, rolls and eggs.
Usually, the hotel room is visited afterwards to relax or to catch up on lost sleep. Taking a walk, exploring the surroundings… How you spend the rest of your time is entirely up to you.
On day four you will go into the field with your guide one last time, followed by breakfast and the official trophy measurement of your fallow stag.
It is possible to take some of the delicious venison home so that you and your family can relive this Czech adventure in a culinary way.
